Tips & Tricks !
Now this maybe an obvious thought to many of you, but it seems to be a point of disgruntlement from all ages and backgrounds. I have just returned from a trip to the UK, the first thing I noticed there was the customer service and friendliness of all I interacted with. This is not just face-to-face, but written too. Perhaps I have been living away too long! From small villages, towns and cities the people I communicated with had a genuine care for politeness, respect and expressing themselves positively. From opening doors, assisting each other in various ways, I was pleasantly surprised. Just a simple ‘please’ or ‘thank you’.
We hear much about the new generation and their lack of respect and politeness in general, is it the iPad, technology etc.. they are being labelled with? Is it lack of education, or pure laziness?
As a recruitment consultant working with all ages and backgrounds I deal with numerous people each week, this is mainly via the Internet, social media and emails. One fact that reoccurs, in some cases, is the general rudeness of candidates, and, also captains/clients too, hence across the board. It seems the written word is not of importance, the person is not physically in front of you etc.. the reader ignores the courtesy of a reply. We need to know what is going on, where they are, availability, preference of position they are seeking, and so on… We provide a service personal to your request. We pride ourselves on ensuring you find the right position for a good successful working career.
This also applies to the client too. We discuss the position with the candidate, interview, assist the correct formation of their CV, check references and certification…this is a timely process. We then forward their CV, upon request, only to receive no answer or response. No common courtesy..Nothing! Is the CV in cyber space? So we telephone, and more often than not we receive a voicemail, we call again after a day, still nothing! So why contact us in the first place to assist your request?
Is the position still available? Too busy? Politeness is respect, and it only takes a very short time to call or write an email. In an industry that requires professionalism, discretion, respect etc… this lack of politeness is contradictory, unprofessional and rude.
So I have had my rant!.. I have heard from other businesses associated with the yachting industry and this seems too common… we are a small community overall, we should all pride ourselves on foundations of politeness, respect, helping each other. Next time you think ‘Oh I’ll answer that tomorrow’, or plainly ignore.. remember, there is a person on the other end waiting for a response, a chance to work …
